I went to the optometrist today and dropped $275 for new glasses. They're not even designer frames, transition lenses, bifocals, or anything fancy like that! (They're high-index lenses, because I'm blind as a bat and they'd be really thick otherwise.) I wear contacts!!  In any case, that was money from my "I Deserve A Sick New Phone" Fund and my 両手に大尉大作戦基金, so it looks like I'll be putting off both until August. :/

day.17 - A pairing you thought would never work out, but did?

Yuki Sohma/Machi Kuragi [Fruits Basket]

I was rooting for them sort of halfheartedly until around chapter 94 (the snow chapter) and then I was like AWWWWWW YEAHHHH SHIP VALIDATION! But I have to admit I was not expecting them to, you know, actually end up together. I think Machi would have accepted Yuki even if he still had the Sohma curse, but in the end I'm kind of glad that she never actually got to see it. The student council was, to an extent, Yuki's refuge from the Sohma family and there really wasn't any need to drag her into the drama (especially since Kakeru was already indirectly involved with it.)

TBH this manga ended on a much happier note than I thought it would, with more than a couple of pairings that I wasn't expecting to work out (Uo-chan and Kureno, Hatori and Mayuko-sensei, Shigure and Akito, etc.) Maybe I can take that as a good sign for Hoshi wa utau?

The rest of the meme:
# Day 18 - What is the cutest pairing?
# Day 19 - A pairing you’ve rooted for since the beginning?
# Day 20 - The ‘can’t stand the sexual tension anymore’ pairing?
# Day 21 - A pairing you like and no one else understands why?
# Day 22 - A pairing you hate and no one else understands why?
# Day 23 - A crazy love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out great?
# Day 24 - A crazy love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out badly?
# Day 25 - A pairing that was/would-be adorable, but could never work out?
# Day 26 - A pairing that you hated and ended up loving?
# Day 27 - A pairing that you loved and ended up hating?
# Day 28 - A pairing that you will never understand?
# Day 29 - What ship had the best proposal?
# Day 30 - Your favorite ship forever and ever and ever!

Is anyone else ridiculously happy with the last couple of chapters of One Piece? Oda-sensei, never leave me.

I was the biggest fan of fruits basket in high school; the anime came first for me. It was life changing, one of the best I've ever seen. Great (clean!) story, lovable characters who ALL develop and grow, life lessons, fluff, aww, tearjerkers, a good ending. Collected most of the manga until people started angsting all, over, the, place.

The way the author made Yuki's attachment to Tohru a mom thing was -__-.

I'm also very near sighted. (650 on a 0-1000 Asian scale, 1000 being medically blind, I think). Got my transition glasses in Taichung, Taiwan for 120 USD.

I'm nearsighted and cross-eye dominant to boot. My US contact lens prescription is -5.75 in my right eye and -7.75 in my left eye. All that late night reading when I was a kid killed my eyesight.

For your other comment: Agree with the Yuki -> Tohru = mom complex. I guess she wanted to tie up that pairing "neatly" but she could have written it much better than that.

For some reason I ended up loving Yuki/Machi more than Kyou/Tohru or nearly any other pairing in the series (my OMGOTP will forever be Hatori/Mayuko tho). I can't understand people being pissed at Furuba and only listing "I was a fan of Yuki" as a reason. Yuki got an AMAZING girl and a beautiful love story, it wasn't a competition!

Also, I think the anime was heavier with the Yuki/Tohru hints, in the manga I never felt the "mother" thing was a big surprise tbh. Then again, maybe I'm too biased towards Furuba idk (although there's a bunch of pairings I didn't even care about).

It's not that I didn't love Kyou/Tohru, but in the end I was more interested in how Yuki/Machi unfolded. They were much better suited for each other! He got his happy ending, which "The Other Person" usually doesn't get in shojo manga (unless you count "I'll be single forever because I cannot love another" as a happy ending).

I wasn't too keen on the mother thing but I did like how Yuki was able to tell Tohru about it and call her by her first name at the end.
